Seeking help from Maternal Minded?

Heres some things you should know before making an appointment.

How Long Are Appointments?

Our initial Telehealth visit will last 60 minutes.

Follow-up appointments are generally scheduled for 15, 30, or 45 minutes. This depends on the complexity of care and if therapy is integrated into the appointment.

What will the Initial session cover?

The initial psychiatric evaluation lasts one hour as a complete psychiatric, medical, social, and perinatal history will be reviewed.

During the appointment, I will ask a range of questions to understand everything about you. We will discuss past trials of medications, history of therapy, and prior diagnosis, if any.

Some therapy can be done during the session, including lactation support if needed but those seeking regular therapy will be referred to a licensed therapist.

What topics can we cover during our session?

The primary role of a PMHNP is to provide evaluation and medication management (if desired) for those struggling with mental health. Perinatal mental health is unique. The risks and benefits of treating or not treating will be discussed. The treatment will be a collaborative agreement between the patient and provider.

I am a lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and can discuss breastfeeding benefits/risks during our appointment.

We can also discuss latch issues and decreased milk production. If there is a medical issue, like mastitis, you will need to see your OB provider for treatment.

Some therapy may be provided during the appointment but those seeking in-depth therapy will be referred out.

Is the appointment Confidential?

Our sessions are confidential

If you are at immediate risk of harming yourself or others I must verify that everyone is safe.

I am also required to report the abuse of minors, the elderly, and those with mental disabilities.

When is the best time to see you?

We can meet at any time during the pregnancy or postpartum. Even if your opting to for-go medication management during the pregnancy, we can establish a relationship and develop a plan that best suits your personal decision. Keep in mind… Maternal Mental Health is important.

Some patients may only want therapy services but choose to have an initial evaluation so that there is an established relationship with a provider.

Some patients may opt for individual therapy first and follow up with me a few weeks later. Some do well with just therapy, while others realize they need to start medication management.

What is your approach?

I believe this is a collaborative relationship. I am here to provide guidance and recommendations but ultimately the plan of care is decided by you. I am not here to push medication. Some people need medication during pregnancy and the postpartum period, others would prefer therapy only.

We will work together to improve your symptoms.
